The dark cruelty of Sarah Everard’s last hours still invades our thoughts and we ask ourselves..."How did this happen?".

What will we learn from this?

There have been lots of promises of reforms over the last year, but listening to the news just sadly confirms further examples of abuse; women getting their drinks spiked, stories of sexual harassment.  The most poignant and heart wrenching of 2021 though, has to be the murder of Sarah Everard.

We are slowly unpicking centuries of deep-rooted sexual aggression towards women, and in Sarah's case, a man entrusted to protect women from violence was actually enacting it.

Ms. Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive who disappeared while walking home through a busy London borough on March 3 and whose remains were found a week later some 50 miles away.

She joins the tragic company of murdered British women — among them Milly Dowler, Joy Morgan, Suzy Lamplugh, Rachel Nickell — in a country where over the past 10 years, on average, a woman is killed by a man every three days. Sarah Everard's name is now sadly etched in British history.
